Internationally acclaimed  composer, Patrick Hawes will be sharing the creative processes involved in writing an exciting new composition and talking generally about the relationship between words and music. Patrick, who is a former Classic FM Composer-in-Residence, is best known for composing the Highgrove Suite for HRH The Prince of Wales and is also an Ambassador for the Prince's Foundation for Children and the Arts.

Central to the day's activity will be his latest work Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell). This is a substantial piece for adult and children's choir and chamber orchestra based on the life of Norfolk's First World War heroine, nurse Edith Cavell.

This workshop is open to all ages (under 18's go FREE) and to singers and non-singers alike. For those who wish there will be the opportunity to work with the composer as he rehearses sections of this exciting new work with the assembled singers (no auditions necessary).

There will be opportunities to ask questions and find out more about the libretto which is based upon the life and faith of Edith Cavell and uses extracts from her personal copy of Thomas a Kempis Of the Imitation of Christ, her last letter to "my nurses" and first hand accounts of he final days. Edith Cavell was executed in Belgium in 1915 for the part she played in helping hundreds of allied troops escape from occupied Belgium.

Commissioned by Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society the work will be premiered with the English Chamber Orchestra on 12 July 2014 in Norwich Cathedral, where Edith Cavell is buried - and still much remembered - and in a Remembrance Concert in St Peter's Sheringham on 8 November 2014.

With the support of grants for the arts from Arts Council England and the North Norfolk Big Society Fund Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society have commissioned internationally renowned composer Patrick Hawes to write a major new work for adult and children's choirs, solo soprano and chamber orchestra. Commemorating the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War Eventide (In Memoriam Edith Cavell) is based on the life of courage and faith shown by Edith Cavell the Norfolk nurse who was executed in Belgium in 1915 and who is buried - and still much remembered - in Norwich Cathedral.

One hundred years ago Europe was in turmoil. On 28 June 1914 Gavrilo Princep had assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand. A few weeks later on 4 August 1914 Britain declared war on Germany: World War One, the Great War, had started.

This concert marks the centenary of the outbreak of WW1 with a programme of appropriate English music. For example, the aptness of The Lark Ascending is reflected in an extract from a letter home from Sergeant-Major Frederic Hillersdon Keeling*:

"Every morning in spring in the front-line trenches I heard the larks singing soon after we stood to about dawn. But those wretched larks made me more sad than almost anything else out here.... Their songs are so closely associated in my mind with peaceful summer days in gardens or pleasant landscapes in Blighty. Here one knows that the larks sing at seven and the guns begin at nine or ten................"
