Anthony Gowing - Organist

In order to raise much needed funds for the Society our accompanist Anthony Gowing will be playing live organ accompaniment to the full length 1925  silent movie Phantom of the Opera starring Lon Chaney.

Anthony has a passion for accompanying silent movies and this will be a great opportunity for Sheringham and north Norfolk to "do something different" on what may well be a cold winter night at the end of February half-term.

Do please come and support us and enjoy the evening.

An Evening of French Reflective Music
Francis Poulenc Litanies a la Vierge Noire
Maurice Duruflé Notre Pere
Maurice Duruflé Requiem

Saturday 8 April 2017, 7.30 pm
Cromer Parish Church, Cromer
David Ballard Conductor

Anthony Gowing Organ

Charli Andrews Mezzo Soprano

Simon Mulligan Baritone

An evening of French reflective music by two of the 20th century's greatest, if not most revolutionary, composers.

Maurice Durufle's Requiem, largely  modelled on the titled work by Gabriel Faure is based on the plainsong tradition. It is a work of great emotion and features an ecstatic climax during the Sanctus which must rival anything in the choral repertoire. Durufle was fiercely protective of his music and burnt many manuscripts but his works in this concert are clearly from the pen of a master.

Francis Poulenc achieved a greater fame in his lifetime though his Litanies which open this concert are a deeply personal work composed in less than a week. This is the first piece of religious choral writing completed by Poulenc for three-part female voices and consists of a sequence of prayers to Mary.

Gala Concert The Seasons
Joseph Haydn The Seasons

Saturday 15 July 2017, 7.30 pm
Auden Theatre, Holt
Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society and orchestra

David Ballard conductor

Written in 1802, after the success of its big brother The Creation, it has suffered in the intervening years from a libretto translated from English to German and back to English and the loss of much piquancy in the text as a consequence. It has now been re-released with an English libretto much closer to the original allowing Haydn's humour, wit and musical genius to be shown at its finest.
