Following SCCS's successful collaboration with Orchestras Live in 2014 we have once again teamed up with them and North Norfolk District Council for this the third concert in the 2015 North Norfolk Orchestras Live season.
We are very pleased to be performing the Norfolk premiere of Norfolk composer Richard Allain's Vespers which was originally commissioned by Southend Festival Chorus but has been re orchestrated especially for the London Mozart Players (LMP).
Founded as the UK's first chamber orchestra LMP enjoys international renown for its concert performances and classical recordings. Whilst continuing a strong classical repertoire LMP also plays an active part in contemporary music as will be amply demonstrated by this concert. In June 2014 LMP became the first UK chamber orchestra to be managed both operationally and artistically by the players.
In addition to performing two much loved Vaughan Williams pieces (one choral, one orchestral) London Mozart Players will play the orchestral version of John Adams's exciting piece of continuous music Shaker Loops thus ensuring that this concert has a strong contemporary feel as well as celebrating great English - and Norfolk - compositions.
An underlying theme of this concert is water. Allain's Vespers is subtitled Songs of the Sea and with line's such as "Break, break, break on the cold gray stones , O Sea!" translates readily from the Thames estuary shoreline to the North Sea coast at Cromer. Shaker Loops began as a piece called Wavemaker in which Adams tried to emulate the ripple effect of bodies of water in his music. He subsequently reworked and retitled the piece Shaker Loops both because of the 'shaking' of the strings as they oscillate between notes and the idea Adams had of Shakers dancing to repetitive, energetic music.
We wish to acknowledge the generous grant for the arts funding of Arts Council England, John Jarrold Trust, Cromer Town Council, Norfolk County Council and others including, of course, Orchestras Live and North Norfolk District Council.

To celebrate its 175th Anniversary, the massed ranks of the Norwich Philharmonic are joined by eight outstanding soloists and several choirs from across Norfolk (including Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society) for a spectacular staging in the Norfolk Showground Arena of Mahler's epic and rarely-performed Symphony of a Thousand.
The Norfolk Showground Arena will be especially transformed into a huge concert hall to create a powerful musical experience that will live long in the memory.
The ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ is so-called because it is scored for a vast orchestra, multiple choirs, organ, off-stage band and 8 solo singers. Indeed it is conceived on such a large scale that the Royal Norfolk Showground Arena is the only venue big enough to stage it, the first time an event of this kind has been held there. In addition to the musicians and singers of the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the concert will also involve other local orchestras, notably the Academy of St Thomas, and at least four other Norfolk choirs including Norfolk & Norwich Festival Chorus, Norwich Cathedral Choir, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society, and Kings Lynn Festival Chorus.
This concert takes place as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival 2016.
