To celebrate its 175th Anniversary, the massed ranks of the Norwich Philharmonic are joined by eight outstanding soloists and several choirs from across Norfolk (including Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society) for a spectacular staging in the Norfolk Showground Arena of Mahler's epic and rarely-performed Symphony of a Thousand.
The Norfolk Showground Arena will be especially transformed into a huge concert hall to create a powerful musical experience that will live long in the memory.
The ‘Symphony of a Thousand’ is so-called because it is scored for a vast orchestra, multiple choirs, organ, off-stage band and 8 solo singers. Indeed it is conceived on such a large scale that the Royal Norfolk Showground Arena is the only venue big enough to stage it, the first time an event of this kind has been held there. In addition to the musicians and singers of the Norwich Philharmonic Orchestra and Chorus, the concert will also involve other local orchestras, notably the Academy of St Thomas, and at least four other Norfolk choirs including Norfolk & Norwich Festival Chorus, Norwich Cathedral Choir, Sheringham and Cromer Choral Society, and Kings Lynn Festival Chorus.
This concert takes place as part of the Norfolk and Norwich Festival 2016.

We return to the Auden Theatre for another of our popular summer gala concerts with music especially chosen to celebrate Her Majesty the Queen's 90th Birthday year.
Mozart's Mass in C major, K317, was completed in 1779 in Salzburg intended for performance at Easter that year. The popular name, Coronation Mass, may relate to its association with the commemoration of the crowining of a miraculous statue of the Virgin Mary near Salzburg. Others connect it to the coronation of Emperor Leopold ll in Prague in 1791.
Handel was commissioned by King George ll to write new music for his coronation service. He had just a few weeks notice. On the morning of 11 October 1727 George ll was crowned to the accompaniment of Handel's four new anthems. This music has featured in British coronations ever since.
The Suite in F major (HWV 348) is one of three suites which comprise The Water Music which premiered on 17 July 1717 after King George l had requested a concert on the River Thames. It remains a firm favourite to this day.
